Headshot Wardrobe 101: What to Wear to Your Next Headshot

When preparing for your headshot session, it's important to consider what to wear. Your outfit can make a significant impact on the final result and how you are perceived by your audience.

A headshot is a professional photograph that showcases your face and personality. It is commonly used for personal branding, social media profiles, and business purposes. When preparing for your headshot session, it's important to consider what to wear. Your outfit can make a significant impact on the final result and how you are perceived by your audience. Here are some tips on what to wear to your headshot session.

Dress according to your brand

Headshots are a representation of your personal brand, so choose clothing that reflects the message you want to portray. Do you work in a more professional setting? Probably best to wear what you would to a job interview or business meeting. Are you in a more casual work environment? Feel free to go a little more casual with your attire. Avoid overly trendy clothing, as this can date the image quickly.

Choose neutral or solid colors

Neutral colors such as black, navy, grey, and beige tend to photograph well and provide a timeless look. They also tend to be flattering and don't distract from your face. Avoid bright colors or bold patterns, as these can be distracting and take away from the focus of the photos.

Solid colors tend to photograph better than patterns or prints. If you want to add a pop of color, consider wearing a brightly colored shirt under a neutral blazer or sweater. Busy patterns can be distracting in a headshot and take away from the focus of your face. If you must wear a pattern, choose something subtle and small, such as a pinstripe or a subtle plaid.

Consider the neckline

A high neckline can be more formal and professional, while a low neckline can be more relaxed and casual. If you're not sure which neckline is best for your headshot, consider your profession and the image you want to convey.

Pay attention to fit

Your outfit should fit well and not be too tight or too loose. A well-fitted outfit can help you look polished and put together. When in doubt, slightly tighter clothing works better than things that are too loose. If you are uncomfortable with a portion of your body that will be in the photograph, don’t try to add bulky clothing to hide it as it will add unnecessary volume and weight to your headshot.

Keep accessories minimal

Avoid wearing bold or distracting jewelry, as this can take away from the focus of your face. If you want to wear jewelry, choose simple pieces that complement your outfit.

Most importantly, wear confidence!!!

The most important thing in a headshot is the confidence of the person in the photo. All of the wardrobe help in the world won’t help a person who looks miserable or uncomfortable in front of the camera. Do you have a pair of shoes that make you feel confident? Is there a pair of pants that make you light up? Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident to help you exude the right emotions in your photo. When preparing for your headshot session, choose an outfit that is congruent with your branding, neutral, and well-fitted. Your outfit should not be the focus of the photo but should complement your face and convey the image you want to portray.
